Public Works: Update Aug 2011 Public Works is the Scottish arm of UNISON's Million Voices for Change campaign www.unison-scotland.org.uk/publicworks To join UNISON call 0845 355 0845 For further information contact: Dave Watson: d.watson@unison.co.uk Trisha Hamilton: t.hamilton@unison.co.uk People First on 1st October – STUC March As part of the There is a Better Way campaign STUC has recently announced the People First march and rally. It is working alongside Scotland’s faith, equality, anti-poverty and campaigning organisations to:Promote redistribution of wealth through fair taxes and living wage jobs Protect the hardest hit through decent services and fair benefits Build stronger communities for all. The march will be a key event for our Public Works campaign to protect services and jobs. Branches should make every effort to mobilise their own members and engage with local communities in order to make this march as big as possible. This is our chance to stage something comparable to the magnificent March for the Alternative in London earlier this year and build on last year’s march in Edinburgh. The march will assemble in Glasgow Green from 11.30 am and move off at 12 noon with a rally to be held in Kelvingrove Park commencing at 1.30pm and finishing at 3.00pm. Initial publicity material in the form of A5 flyers and posters are available in hard copy, from West Campbell Street or can be downloaded from the campaign website http://www.peoplefirstoctoberfirst.org/campaign-materials together with other details about the march. Following the rally, there will be a number of fringe events These will include an open session of the STUC black workers Conference, and events hosted by the Disbled Workers Committee of the STUC, Church Action on Poverty and the STUC youth Committee. More details will follow. Finally a gala evening is being organised to mark the 40 th Anniversary of the UCS Work In. This will take place in the Mitchell Theatre at 7.00pm. Tickets for this can be purchased from Glasgow City Council.Part of the planning for the People First march, is a day of action on Sat 3rd September. The plan is that there will be some activity in every town building support for the march on 1st October. Branches should work with their local TUC on this activity. 2People - not numbers We are constantly on the lookout for people willing to act as case studies and share their stories with the media. Case studies are a key resource in helping us attract media attention and we need people from all sectors and on all issues. A picture is worth an average of 986.4 statistics. If you, or one of your members, would be willing to talk about how the cuts are affecting you then please contact Trisha Hamilton, Communications Officer, on 0141 342 2877 or email t.hamilton@unison.co.uk. Your picture here UNISON’s Public Works campaign is not just about challenging cuts, it’s also about promoting a positive image of Scotland’s public services. We are always looking for photographs of UNISON members - not campaigning , not protesting - just doing their ordinary day to day jobs - without which our country would fall apart public services, from all sectors, to use in our publications and materials. Please spread the word among your members and ask them to send us photographs of them at work providing a public service. If you would like any more information, or if you have photographs you would like to send, then please contact Trisha Hamilton, Communications Officer on 0141 342 2877 or email t.hamilton@unison.co.ukThe Torture Never Stops.. cuts impact assessment If we don’t know about it - we can’t campaign about it. It is really important that we ensure a strong flow of information through the Cuts Impact Assessments. Branches are reminded to update your Cuts Impact Assessment forms and send them to Fiona Montgomery, Policy and Information team, at f.montgomery@unison.co.uk We need real-life case studies of members who are willing to talk about the impact of the cuts. If you, or someone you know, is willing to take part then please contact Trisha Hamilton, Communications Officer, on 0141 342 2877 or email t.hamilton@unison.co.uk We are looking for photographs of members at work to promote a positive image of public services. Please send your pictures to t.hamilton@unison.co.uk Remember to update your Cuts Impact Assessment forms and send them to Fiona Montgomery, Policy and Information team, at f.montgomery@unison.co.uk |
